Chief Scientific Adviser outlines Dublin's Bid to enthusiastic support in Brussels

Date: 03 June 2008

Following up on the interest expressed in Dublin’s bid after the launch in December 2007, Ireland’s ‘scientific wild geese’ working in Brussels organised a “Back the Bid” reception on Tuesday 3rd June at the Stanhope Hotel in Brussels.

The reception, sponsored by Enterprise Ireland, was aimed at raising awareness of Dublin’s bid for ESOF 2012 and had over 200 attendees. It provided a platform for the Chief Scientific Adviser, Prof. Patrick Cunningham, to update Irish and international science stakeholders on important developments back home in support of a growing knowledge economy rooted in science.

During his address, Prof. Cunningham pointed out that investment by multinationals in R&D has quadrupled from 2005 – 2007 and that over the same period, research activities funded by Science Foundation Ireland had yielded almost a doubling of patents. The goal of doubling PhDs by 2013 is also on track and is accompanied by a significant upswing in non-Irish nationals choosing to pursue research opportunities in Ireland “because they like what they see”.

Prof. Cunningham presented copies of Mary Mulvihill’s ‘Ingenious Ireland’ and Neil Hegarty’s ‘Dublin: a view from the ground’ to a lucky few, while recognising Mary Kavanagh of Directorate General Research for her membership of ESOF. The Chief Scientific Adviser also encouraged all attendees to join ESOF and to get involved in this year’s event in Barcelona.
